Promenade Lighting began with a simple idea: take inspiration from the clean lines and quiet beauty of Japanese shoji-style lamps and create something distinctly our own.
We saw more than a single lamp design. We saw a platform for creating thoughtfully engineered table lighting—lamps that could combine architectural character, modern lighting technology and interchangeable components in ways that would continue to evolve.
With a shared love of engineering and design, we developed the Kyoto Shoji-Style Lamp from the ground up. Its appearance draws inspiration from traditional shoji aesthetics, while its construction uses modern Wood PLA materials and additive manufacturing techniques.
Reaching the finished design required extensive prototyping, testing and refinement. We developed our manufacturing process to minimize surface blemishes while preserving the textures, architectural details and individual character that make each lamp distinctive.
Engineered Around the Light
The Kyoto lamp was designed around both illumination and airflow. Its COB LED light source produces bright, even illumination and can be dimmed to suit the room. A concealed internal airflow path carries warm air around the side panels and away from the center of the lamp, allowing us to retain the clean appearance of a closed top without prominent exterior vents.
The electronics were selected to make the lamp practical in everyday use. A single remote can operate one lamp or multiple compatible lamps, making it easy to coordinate a matching pair or a larger group.
Designed and Made In House
Promenade Lighting is the consumer lighting brand of Promenade Engineering LLC. Our team consists of a product engineer and a marketing director who together create nearly everything our customers see.
Every lamp is designed, manufactured, assembled, inspected and prepared for shipment in house. This includes the CAD design, additive manufacturing, post-processing, electronic assembly, order fulfillment and packaging. Electronic components are obtained from carefully selected suppliers and assembled into each lamp by our product engineer.
We are an engineering company that creates lamps. That perspective shapes every decision we make: a product should be beautiful, but it must also be functional, serviceable and practical for everyday use.
Our designs undergo extensive in-house evaluation, including prolonged continuous-use testing and real-world durability testing—with occasional assistance from Annie, our German Shepherd and unofficial quality-control inspector.
What Comes Next
The Kyoto Collection is only the beginning.
Future designs include the 18-inch Kyoto Grand and several new lamp families that move beyond shoji inspiration into a broader blend of American architectural styles. We are also developing additional power and control options intended to make our lamps even more flexible.
